CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Ongoing winter weather conditions have prevented and delayed trash pickup in many areas of West Virginia, but the state Public Service Commission (PSC) is asking for that the be resolved.
The PSC said in a press release Wednesday that is has received complaints from customers who have not had their trash picked up in more than a week, and 12 News has received reports of collections being delayed even more than that in multiple cities and towns in north central West Virginia.
If garbage haulers cannot pick a customer’s trash due to snowy or icy conditions, they should make alternate pickup plans, the PSC said in the release.
The PSC recognized that in snow and ice, it is not always safe for trucks to do regular pickups in some areas. However, it recommended that instead of skipping pickups, the haulers should park a truck in a safe area near the missed routes to give customers a chance to dispose of their trash.
“The truck should be available for an ample amount of time to allow customers of that route to come to the location, and with proof of being a customer in good standing, dispose of trash that normally would be picked up by the hauler,” the PSC recommended.
The release said that “The availability of these trucks should begin by the end of the week,” and that customers should be notified of the pickup alternatives via phone call, text, email or Facebook.
