Flags Lowered to Honor Former West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Darrell Vivian McGraw Jr

Governor Jim Justice has directed that all United States and West Virginia flags at the Capitol Complex and state-owned facilities in Wyoming County be flown at half-staff from dawn to dusk on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, to honor the legacy of former West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Darrell Vivian McGraw, Jr.

Justice McGraw’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to public service. After serving three years in the United States Army, he pursued higher education at West Virginia University, earning both a Master’s degree and a Juris Doctorate from the West Virginia College of Law.​

Legal Counsel: Justice McGraw served as legal counsel to Governor Hulett C. Smith from 1965 to 1969 and later provided his expertise to the West Virginia Legislature.
Supreme Court Justice: Elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in 1976, he also served as chief justice during his tenure.

Attorney General: Justice McGraw dedicated two decades to the role of Attorney General of West Virginia, furthering his impact on the state’s legal system and public policy.
This gesture of lowering flags pays tribute to Justice McGraw’s lifelong dedication to justice, education, and public service. His contributions to West Virginia’s legal and governmental landscape will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
