Clerks report brisk day both online and in-person on final day to register to vote for Nov. 5 election

PRINCETON, W.Va. — Mercer County Clerk Verlin Moye says his office was busy Tuesday on the final day to register to vote for the Nov. 5 General Election.

“I would categorize it as very brisk,” Moye told MetroNews. “In the last four or five days we’re getting about 50 to 60 new registrations every day.”

Berkeley County Clerk Tony Petrucci said both online registrations and those in-person have been steady for months.

“They’ve been coming on all along,” Petrucci said. “We’ve been putting information on Facebook and on our website and I’ve been on the radio a couple of times.”

Berkeley County is going to end up with more than 95,000 registered voters for the general election which is 12,000 more total voters than the 2022 fall mid-term election.

Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said voter registration and changing political parties has been a daily occurrence at her office for better than five months.

“It was before the primary and it has just continued. We’ve been steady all year so far,” McCormick said.

Moye said the increased interest is tied to national politics.

“The presidential of course being the key there but there’s some Senate races and congressional district races that are pretty high-profile and drawing a lot of attention,” he said.

Petrucci said he hopes the interest in registering to vote will result in high voter turnout on election day.

“I feel the same awe in the air that there could be a busy day,” he said.

Moye said the interest is higher the closer we get to Nov. 5.

All three of clerks have started their poll worker training classes this week. McCormick said she and her staff have trained about 800 workers so far.

Early voting begins in West Virginia a week from Wednesday.
